The Journalist database is filled with a vast amount of journalists which can be added to your Smart.pr address book. But how do you find the right journalists for your campaign?

Step 1. Search for contacts by using the filter options.

The contact details in the Journalist database contain different types of tags and information, which can be utilized to filter the data in the database. These filteres are divided into the following categories:

  1. Subject (Which topic(s) does the journalist write about?)

  2. Media Type (Does the journalist write for a newspaper, a magazine or an online blog?)

  3. Locality (In which city or town does the medium or journalist publish?)

  4. Province (In what specific province does the medium or journalist publish?)

  5. Contact type (Is this a person or an editorial board)

  6. Language (In what language does the journalist write?)

Example:

You are looking for journalists that write about sustainability in Dutch national newspapers. Start with adding the topic 'Sustainability' in the left column. Click on +Filter, and then on Subject. You can search for the tag 'Sustainability' and select it.

In the right bottom corner of the search menu you will the total number of 'hits' for your query. For this specific example you will several hundreds of results, since the subject 'Sustainability' is rather broad.

To narrow down the number of hits, you can add extra search filters. Would you like to get to know newspaper journalist that write about sustainability? In that case you can add the filter 'Daily Newspapers (national)' by clicking on the +Filter button and adding a new Media type. Now, the results will show contacts in the Journalist database that write about sustainability in Dutch national Newspapers.

Cross selection or addition

By default, a cross selection is made when filtering on subjects. If you filter "Sustainability" and "Environment", only the journalists who write about both topics will be displayed, thus meeting both tags. If you prefer to get an overview of journalists who write about at least one of the topics you have selected, you can opt for an addition instead of a cross selection. To do this, choose 'ANY of the selected subjects' in the filter menu instead of 'Contacts should match 'ALL' of the selected subjects'.

When filtering by Locality & Province, Media type, or Language, an addition is generated by default. If you select both the "Amsterdam" and "Rotterdam" locality tag, journalists who meet at least one of these tags will be displayed. They do not need to have both tags. You can also adjust the default setting here. To filter for journalists who meet all the locations, media types, and/or languages you have selected, choose 'Contacts should match ALL of the selected subjects'.

Step 2: Add the contacts to your personal address book.

As soon as you have selected all the filters that you want to use, you'll see the results popping up as a list of journalist in the left column. Now you can add these contacts to your personal press lists.

Only want to add a specific selection from the list of hits to your press lists?

Select the relevant journalist by clicking the boxes as can be seen in the picture below. At the bottom of your screen, you'll see the option ‘Add to address book’. By clicking this button a pop-up will show up. Now you van add this selection of journalists to an already existing list press list, you can also directly create a completely new press list.

Do you want to add all the results from the list to your own address book?

First, click on the drop-down menu (the down arrow). You can find this symbol at the top right of the left column of the screen. Then click on Add all to list. A pop-up window will open where you can choose which existing list these contacts will be added to. Do you want to create a new list for these contacts immediately? Then click on the plus sign at the top of this menu and create a new list (and any category). Keep in mind that you can only add 250 contacts to your address book each time using this function.
